Volunteer Job Descriptions

6 and Under Rope (1 point job, 1 per meet, on deck): Helps place 6 and under finish rope at 15 yard mark on pool edge and holds rope during 6 and under heats. Must work all 6&U events during the meet (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke). Home meets only.

Back Gate Attendant (1 point job, 1 per shift, seated): Monitors back gate and people coming in and out during the meet. Involves stamping hands and directing traffic through main entrance of clubhouse. Home meets only.

Clerk of Course (2 point job, 3 per shift, on deck, on your feet): This volunteer helps to organize swimmers in their appropriate lane line for all heats during the meet. Position needed at both home and away meets. Volunteer will also Collaborate with team TSA representative and from opponent's team as needed to combine events when lane space allows. Volunteer will Record deviations from the original heat sheet (scratches, substitutions, lane changes, etc.) for reconciliation with timing data. Volunteer Training Required prior to first meet.

Concession Stand (2 point job, 2 per shift, under tent): This volunteer will help serve food, collect payment, and keep concession stand clean and functioning properly. Home meets only.

Heat Ribbon Distributor (1 point job, 2 per shift, on deck): This volunteer hands out heat winner ribbons for main heats and participation ribbons for all other heats at the finish end of the deck. Home meets only.

Hospitality and Water Cooler (1 point job, 1 per shift, on deck, ability to be mobile throughout the meet):Refills Water Coolers and delivers water to those on the pool deck who cannot leave their posts, including Coaches, Timers, Clerk of Course, Stroke & Turn, Starter, etc. Home meets only.

Kid Pusher (2 point job, 1-2 per tent per shift): This volunteer is responsible for keeping swimmers in the assigned age group with their group in assigned area. Volunteer is also responsible to make sure swimmers are on deck for heats and delivers swimmers to the Clerk of Course for line up in timely manner. 6&U kid pushers must work through the end of the 6&U events (breaststroke).

Meet Administrator (2 point job, 2 per shift, on deck, seated under tent): Needed at home and away meets. Receive end of main of event record slips from runners, enter place finish points and DQs in computer system for scoring purposes. Training required in Meet Maestro/Swimtopia, provided free by TSA.

Updates the current event & heat at meets using the SwimTopia mobile app, to update the Live Bar and keep the meet timeline up-to-date during the meet. Training Required prior to first meet.

Order of Finish Judge (1 point job, 1 per shift, on deck): Determines the finishing position/lane for swimmers in the main heat of each event. Must be focused on main heat and watch lanes closely. Training required prior to first meet.

Runner (1 point job, 1 per shift, on deck, mobility required): Takes heat slips from Order of Finish Judge, and DQ slips from Stroke and Turn Judge and delivers them to the Meet Administrator.

Set-up & Clean-up for Meets (1 point job, 5 per home meet, 4 per away meet, must be able to lift, carry, and move around the deck): Meet Setup and Meet Cleanup are separate jobs. Set-up crew arrives early to meet to ensure chairs, tables, tents, and equipment are all in place before the start of the meet.

Clean-up crew helps to take down tents and return all chairs and tables at the end of the meet. Helps with returning any equipment to the closet and cleaning up any trash or items left behind.

Starter (2 point job, 1 per shift, on deck, on your feet): Operate starting device for home meets. TSA training required for this position (free clinic offered). Scope also includes Announcing the events and heats during home swim meets, and making announcements as directed by TSA representative (weather-related) or volunteer coordinator (shift change) during meets. Home meets only.

Stroke and Turn Judge (2 point job, 1 per shift, on deck, on your feet): Observe each main event for length of the pool (watching assigned half of lanes). Note any disqualifying actions by main event swimmers on DQ slip and send via runner to Meet Administrator for scoring. Volunteers needed for both home and away meets. TSA Training required for this position, free clinic is provided by the TSA.

Timer (2 point job, 6 per shift, on deck, on your feet): Volunteer operates timing system/stopwatch during meet and is responsible for paying close attention to their assigned lane during all heats and stopping watch promptly. Training on home timing system required prior to first meet. Volunteers needed for both home and away meets.

Volunteer Check-In (1 point job, 1 per meet, on deck): Position includes helping with volunteer sign-in and passing out needed equipment to volunteers. Check-in volunteers should understand the roles of other volunteers at a swim meet so they can answer any questions. Could also include entering data from volunteer sign-in sheets into system or other tasks related to volunteers.
